Custom Stat Goals or Targets

Goal:
I’d love to be able to input my own custom stat goals in percent or flat number into AMR.

Why:
Stat weights have an inherit flaw where you have to constantly be simming yourself. If you’re not careful, you can drastically over gear / over shoot one stat and have way too much of X. Also, if I know I need 30-33.33% crit rating, then dump everything else into haste for my Frost Mage, I should be able to tell AMR’s tool this. I’d love to be able to edit my machine learning results to tell it “hey, I need more crit. What you spat out wasn’t enough. Let’s bump that number up a bit.” Then have AMR try it’s best with the gear I have to achieve what I ask it.

Machine Learning stats for my illvl:
ilvl 903 stat goal:
7100 crit
13000 haste
1000 mastery
2700 vers

Ideal stats target:
9000 crit (ish or 30%)
8000 haste (ish)
1000 mastery
1000 vers
… and I’d play with these until I was happy with my sim results. Or I could tell AMR to sim around these targets and figure out what’s actually best for my character, keeping the targets in mind.

Thoughts?

It’s not clear right now (we have a UI update in the works for Machine Learning gearing strategies) that ML isn’t just shooting for one set of stats. The result actually describes a “surface” of the simulation results. The “goals” we report right now are just one set of stat goals that simulate high. There may be other stat goals that are just as good or very close.

Regarding frost mages in particular - I’ve looked at the stats for frost a lot (I have a pretty decently geared frost mage myself) and I’ve found that you don’t need to get all the way to the shatter cap for optimal damage.

Regardless, by definition, the stats suggested by machine learning are the stats which are going to get you the highest simulated DPS. You aren’t going to end up doing better (in a simulation) by manually tweaking them.

If you wanted to use the site as a calculator instead of an optimizer… we just don’t have it set up like that really right now. You could achieve your goal by using stat weights with caps, though. The Machine Learning is so closely tied to the actual simulation results that it can’t be manually tweaked.

Woo Frost Mage buddy! And that’s good to know. Posting my logs in the Mage discord and asking for help only results in a “You need more crit” reply.

And that makes sense. I appreciate the explanation about the ML side of things. I find it sort of magical as I don’t really understand how it works.

I’ll continue playing around with stat weight caps to see if I can get familiar with that process as well.
Thanks again for the reply!

Yeah once I finish updates for “version 2” of our gearing strategies, I’m going to do a couple write-ups that explain the whole process a bit more. I made a post answering another question that gives a brief summary of it, may or may not be helpful: BiB Suggestion Sims Lower Than Original Gear - #6 by yellowfive
