My best in bags recommendation is doing weird things. I use the addon and export the string, paste it into AMA. It pulls all the right information through, but then recommends I make changes that go against the recommended values.
Example attached. It’s telling me to switch to the 410 back I just picked up from mythic cache but also tells me it will be a negative net hps increase if I do?
It’s also telling me to add agility gems for healing, along with haste enchants that seem to contradict the recommended stat weights.
That cloak will absolutely be an upgrade by having 55 item levels more, no question about that.
The issue is something completely different: You can see and change your spec priority to the left of your equipment. Currently Enhancement is at the top which means AMR will consider this as your most important spec and will optimize accordingly.
Specifically, AMR will select your Azerite traits, gems and enchants for Enhancement but those items will then be reused for lower priority specs (i.e. Restoration) if they’re still better than everything else you have. If Restoration is your most played / important spec, just move that to the top.
@mrfiskit: You have Restoration set as your secondary configuration, with Enhancement at a higher priority. Therefore, AMR will optimize for Enhancement first, then make suggestions for Restoration that excludes gem/enchantment changes for items already selected for Enhancement. That’s why you’re getting the Agility gem suggestion – that item was chosen for Enhancement, but the stats on the item are also better for Restoration than the other cloaks you currently have.

Yeah the optimizer is behaving very oddly for tank gear. Moving 390 ilvl average down to 380 and swapping in some really poor choices. It’s almost as if the versatility is weighted so heavily that the optimizer is willing to sacrifice anything and everything to maximize that number.
Could you provide your addon export string (that you copied from the addon to the website) so that I can reproduce your case? Same goes for anyone else that notices a problem with an optimization. Also let me know which gearing strategy and which toughness threshold you are using.
I’m currently also getting that (or a similar) problem with multiple setups on my Death Knight. On my most important setup (Mythic +15) AMR correctly recommends using my item level 400 weapon with a Fallen Crusader enchant.
On a secondary setup (Raid Tanking) AMR then wants to use another weapon (either my Artifact from Legion or the transmog mace from Uldir) with a Stoneskin Gargoyle enchant. That appears to happen as long as the difficulty is above a certain threshold and I’m (almost?) guaranteed to die - which seems ridiculous as that starts appearing somewhere between a difficulty of Normal and Heroic at an item level of 398. According to a couple sims I’ve run the death chance seems very high in general regardless of the weapon used.
When moving that setup to the top, AMR keeps the correct weapon but recommends switching the enchant even when using an enchant threshold of 5%.

Pretty sorry , I’ve just sold that shield (from a bank where I’ve lost it) - no item = no problem. Thought it doesn’t matter which toughness I was used - 136 ilvl shield should never be better than 385 (anyway it was builtin Mythic+ All Defense). Will post a whole info in case if it happens again.
@elekelek I’ll take a look… seems like something going on with shield block amount probably, like it is getting just outside or on the edge of the range that we ran the data for, and going a bit crazy. Will take a little tweaking but should be able to get it fixed up tomorrow-ish.
@asashdor Yeah it looks like the value of stoneskin gargoyle is too high in some cases, causing that weirdness. I’ll tweak the runeforges a bit.
@dione The crit and vers gems/enchants are pretty close in value for your character. If I disable the gem/enchant threshold, it goes all vers. So everything looks fine there to me. The ilvl is going down mainly because it wants to get a lot of versatility.
In general it seems for blood DK that it’s a little too versatility-happy… will see if I can figure out why that is and tone it back a tad. Though vers will still almost certainly come out on top as the best defensive stat.
I pushed an update with a few tweaks that should address the issues posted here – give it another try and let me know how it is. You will need to re-import from the addon, or change at least one setting and re-optimize to get a new result.
The only downside is that there is a small risk that low-level tank gear could rank poorly with these tweaks… I’ll run some tests tomorrow, but let me know if you see anything happen. This would be down in the like… ilvl 300 range.
@yellowfive Looks like the tweaks seemed to have improved the optimization for the better for sure. Still not quite sure I agree with the shifts overall. The tweak you made yesterday does allow for better gearing choices, like selecting some 425 gear pieces instead of downgrading to 380 or some other crazy stuff.
Prior to whatever this latest update was the optimizer seemed to be on par with adjusting the tank gear to allow for DPS output to play a factor, whether for threat management or for the critical strike to parry conversion or some other reason. After the update a few days ago that seems to no longer be the case. Even adjusting the mythic plus slider doesn’t really change the stat analysis differentials very much.
With the live AMR it seems the only settings worth using are the “All DPS” or “All TUF” there is no in between.
I haven’t done any sims or math yet just my qualitative assessment. Thanks for all the hard work. AMR has been my go to for years.
We can definitely play around with those thresholds if they seem too high/low.
When I use the string that you posted earlier and start at “All DPS” and then move up one notch at a time on the Mythic+ strategy, I do notice a gradual progression towards more defensive gear – M8 is the cross-over point where it starts to go all defensive gear.
It could be that is a pretty conservative threshold… the rough idea is that M7 (which corresponds to Normal on the Raid strategy) is around where 380-385-ish gear would feel comfortable starting to cross over into more DPS-oriented stuff. But if you set it to M7, the goal is that it won’t really push all-DPS until you are about 10 or more ilvls higher, so in the 395-400 area.
