Balance Druid Gearing Goal 30% haste for Emerald Dreamcatcher?

How smart is AMR about Emerald Dreamcatcher? The best advice from Druid Discord channel is to run Simulationcraft while equipping Emerald Dreamcatcher and it will generate realistic Pawn strings. With those I can first build an AMR Gearing Strategy with a fresh simulation and then input the Pawn stat weights.

I want to trust AMR’s machine learning to do this well for me. Should I be getting a reasonable outcome while equipping Emerald Dreamcatcher and running a Krosus sim to generate a Machine Learning Gear Strategy?

As everybody knows if you don’t have TONS of haste with Emerald Dreamcatcher you can’t effectively use it. Well you can… by very carefully picking spells using Gebuz’ charts to weave in between Starsurge. But I expect you’re going to get a much worse result than juggling gear/games/empowerments to achieve the magic 30% haste mark.

I did some exploration on this a while back. It seems like a topic that would be good for an even more in depth look.

I found that the 30% number is not simulating as optimal in most cases. I even tried making a special rotation to ensure that it was using the spells exactly how people suggested, but doing that wasn’t a noticeable dps increase compared to the rotation I am using now.

I think people like how the spec plays with 30% haste… but there isn’t a lot of evidence that I have seen which shows it is actually a necessary number for optimal dps.

I will create some tests and show the results so people don’t just have to take my word for it.

13.5% Haste with ED looks pretty strange.

If I were a human “Best in Bags” program telling someone how to gear manually with Emerald Dreamcatcher I’d tell them the following:

  • Can player’s gear get to the 30-33% Haste breakpoint? (So they can do 2 solar wraths in between starsurges without losing ED buff)
  • If not, can they get to the lower 19.4% breakpoint? (so you can do an Empowered Lunar Strikes with Starlord talent in between starsurges without losing ED buff)
  • If not, don’t even choose Emerald Dreamcatcher as a legendary.
  • The crit/mastery/int resulting should still work but obviously if you have well over 33% or 19.4% haste then let AMR keep optimizing

I’m not sure if these AMR scripts are available to public but I did look through the Simulationcraft source and it definitely considers trying to fit spells in the ED buff. It refers to that as “actions.ed” and runs down a priority list considering spell times and other buffs to see which best dps spells it can fit and still keep dots up.
I notice over 3:30 min period most of the 99% Boomkins use a pretty small variety of spells with ED so the best geared most talented players seem to be repeating the best spell choices over and over.
Obviously bloodlust, berserk racial, and especially gear like Whispers in the Dark trinket will temporarily boost casting time incredibly high.
Which is why Gebuz’s chart has a recipe for what to cast in the 80% haste range
And we have weakaurus like Ana’s adaptation of someone elses that tells you which spells you should be able to cast during your starsurge window.
As your haste or cast speed goes higher that aura changes to show combinations of more powerful spells to cast.

So far probably these details are well known to all of you in this thread. But I wanted to be complete as I can, having mostly just theoretical experience at this point.
For reference, Gebuz’s chart https://docs.google.com/document/d/1c6-_akHl_Cja-uwg20Gt8R0f12pcw4_qtVcT7LyZW4A/preview#heading=h.mzpmfymmin6d

My Gear/Sims
If I pick the highest haste gear I have and swap all gems and enchants to haste I can manage to get 32-33% haste while dropping down only a couple ilevel from my AoE set.

Here’s the export I got on Zoopagoo of Silver-Hand for that hand selected set
I can get 668k parse on Krosus using my machine learning gear strategy

If I pull a log from a Balance Druid at ilevel 899 (3 less than me) using same legendaries they are doing 814k dps over a fight length similar to the one in AMR sim above. 76% uptime of the ED buff there.

Player: World of Warcraft

I’ve been looking at this. I made an updated rotation that will get a better uptime on Emerald Dreamcatcher - as soon as we’re done with our big back-end changes I’ll post it up.

With the better rotation, I ran some batch simulations to try different combinations of Haste and Mastery. I still saw no evidence at all that there was a 30% haste soft cap that was desirable.

I will post up some findings on this once I get it to the live site so that I can share the simulation results.

Thanks. The desirability should come in weaving bigger spells in between that Emerald Dreamcatcher buff triggered by starsurge. That buff decreases astral power cost of Starsurge.
That means more starsurges can be cast per Astral Power
That means anything else cast with this buff will also cost less AP including really expensive spells
When you get a huge haste or cast speed buff like Whispers int he Dark, Erratic Metronome, Bloodlust etc you can even cast Full Moon in between starsurges and make it cost less power.

Why is it good to cast so many more starsurges? Well its especially good now because Tier 19 4 set bonus raises starsurge damage by 15%
So where you might previously would get only about a 5% bump in dps from your starsurges, casting more of them means more of a buff with ED.

Why would your current sim script do a not noticable difference in dps with 30% breakpoint? Well there are more breakpoints than 30%. There’s one at 33% and there are more higher per Gebuz’ chart.

So unless your script is intentionally weaving the best spell possible in between starsurges you won’t see that bump.

What is it doing with the cost of spell and timing of it during Emerald Dreamcatcher buff?
When I examined the Krosus rotation resulting from an AMR sim a couple days ago I really didn’t see anything taking much advantage of it.

I have an updated rotation that looks to fit more spells between Starsurge, and increases the uptime on the Emerald Dreamcatcher buff to the levels that I’m seeing in logs.

The important thing is keeping the buff up as much as possible, to effectively get more Starsurge uses over the course of the fight. Generating as much AP as possible with the buff up is the main driver for what spells to use.

What I find is that if you were to, say, sacrifice the 30% haste “breakpoint” for getting more Mastery, your damage is just as good. I’ll post up some numbers and simulation results soon to show you all what I mean.

Very interesting. We all fall into these “rule of thumb” pitfalls and you guys generally know what is really going on under the hood. Thanks for your patience listening to me overexplain what I’ve barely come to understand myself.

Looking forward to seeing what the eventual updates will reveal.

I don’t have the new stuff live yet, but I do have a private version that you could clone and test with:

This is the rotation:
http://www.askmrrobot.com/wow/theory/rotation/e88fe42c1f934e7192f2b49c9c79bdd4?spec=DruidBalance&version=live&share=true

Here is a sim I did with it (from here you can copy the Balance Fix version of the wiki):
http://www.askmrrobot.com/wow/simulator/report/c8dd42a5f470413281c41a829ffcc6e1

And here is a quick batch sim I did with this character, showing that any haste value from 9000 - 12000 performs just as well (assuming we shift the stats over to mastery instead):
http://www.askmrrobot.com/wow/simulator/report/8dd94c882b9c40e59506200c4849e954

This isn’t a full write-up on this topic, but, it gives you an idea of the type of data I’ve been looking at that leads me to believe that the haste breakpoints aren’t really a “thing”.

In my experience, rotations and haste values that rely on “fitting spells” between cooldowns or certain buff durations are rarely as important as people theorize them to be. Over the years I’ve shown this to be true for many specs.

Thanks for the links. I’ve been poring over this and the logs.

I ran into an error with the new Rotation…
http://www.askmrrobot.com/wow/simulator/report/b3e5fde0c21c4f5bbb509f2bcb9b8e81

I ran into an error immediately as well. I assumed there might be some base changes that were not in in the public version?

I used a custom function. You need to copy the “balance fix” version of the wiki I used to make use of that rotation right now. Set that as your version when you simulate instead of “live”.

You can just click on the version in that report I linked and then use the clone link on the wiki to do this and make your own copy.

same error.

I clicked on this link; and press on Clone
http://www.askmrrobot.com/wow/simulator/report/c8dd42a5f470413281c41a829ffcc6e1

I can see now the Version but get the same error

Did you pick your saved version when you ran your simulation?

I don’t think we really have a chance of navigating this without clear instructions.
I’ve been successful making a “private” and a “shared” version of your rotation but get the same error as agenthawk did when I try to select the rotation
I’ve tried unsuccessfully creating an alternative to “live”
I’ve tried exporting your json and importing it and saving it

I came up with Not Available
I’ve managed to get another error when simming with this rotation “The referenced rotation ‘DruidBalancePreFightEdit’ could not be found”

Also I see no “clone” option as agenthawk suggested. Just a lot of save/copy/import/export

I was mistaken… there is no way for you to copy/clone the custom Version I made.

We are going to be doing an update this week sometime which will have my changes. If you don’t want to wait, these are the spells you would need to change:
http://www.askmrrobot.com/wow/theory/mechanic/spell/solarwrath?spec=DruidBalance&version=b033276f5c234d51b2b09e0a488468b6
You need to add the custom GCD that is triggered by this spell so that it works with Starlord correctly.

http://www.askmrrobot.com/wow/theory/mechanic/function/astralpowergain?spec=DruidBalance&version=b033276f5c234d51b2b09e0a488468b6
You need to copy this function into your version of the wiki.

You also need to add this custom pre-fight rotation to your list and make sure it is referenced from my new rotation:
http://www.askmrrobot.com/wow/theory/rotation/32e4be471586451a9f71ee310cca5a76?spec=DruidBalance&version=live&share=true
It just adds in the pre-potion so that I can do custom potion timing in the rotation.

Or, like I said, wait until later this week and it will all be part of the live/default stuff.

So the new “correct” haste for Balance Druid and ED is ~24%
I did a brand new Goroth Heroic beta gearing strategy today and it picked the following for me which would only give me 19.11% haste. Vs my hand picked 24% haste instead of in 30s.

See Gebuz updated analysis and suggestions:

AMR chose with Goroth:
