Ring Confusion Ele Shaman

Hi,

When I use Best in Bags, it recommenrds I keep wearing Cyrce’s Circlet from Season 2, however when I click on it in the right panel of BiB, it shows ALL my other rings (even crap 610 ilvl ones) as +10% to +24% DPS improvements, and Cyrce’s Circlet as the worst ring. I’m confused.

Circe’s Circlet is in a weird position, in that it’s three ‘gem slots’ give it a weighting that may feel it’s punching above it’s weight. Is it likely to need replacing, at this point? Yes… and it isn’t entirely faulty logic to manually exclude it from the Optimiser.

The optimiser offers recommendations as to what gear to use… just that; due to it’s unique nature it is worth hanging on to above and beyond any iL610 alternatives so it can be switched back in if the real-world game play indicates otherwise.

I have a couple of characters that have been advised to ditch Circe’s in favour of more traditional items but they are only working in the AiL 660’s/670’s, so it does/will happen.

If you have higher iL options, feel free to manually exclude it from optimisation to see what higher items get suggested & trial a few ‘regular fights’ to see if you notice anything ‘off/weaker’.

Hope this helps…

The list ranking of the Cyrce’s Circlet was never fully implemented… all of the value for DPS specs comes from the gems, and the list ranking does not try all of the gem combinations when ranking it. You have to actually run Best in Bags or Best in Slot, and then it will try all of the combos and use the ring if it scores better.

The other weird thing with the ring from a display perspective is that the stats from the gems don’t get included in your character’s stat total… just another oddity because those are “special effects” and not actual stats.

I think that most people will replace this ring in a few weeks, so I’m trying to avoid going back and implementing some of those things.

That said… in your specific case, Cyrce’s Circlet is a pretty good choice. I can’t speak specifically to elemental shamans (@Swol is our shaman guy), but in this case the total secondary stats you get from that configuration of Cyrce’s Circlet is 7,873. The only other ring you have with more total stats than that is Band of Boundless Hunger, with 8,209. But the optimizer doesn’t like the spread of stats on that ring as much as some of your others – if you exclude the circlet, it picks Wastelander’s Gilded Loop.

This is indicating to me that the optimizer likes Mastery for your particular combination of talents and available gear. Cyrce’s Circlet gives you a better combination and more total stats than Wastelander’s Gilded Loop, and the Band of Boundless Hunger is low on mastery and high on haste – a combo that it doesn’t like as much.

Rings are a bit weird in that item level is a little less important because they have such huge chunks of stats on them – sometimes dropping a little item level and getting a better ratio of stats works out better.

Thanks for the detailed explanation. Now I understand the complexity a little better. Yes, Elemental favors Mastery. So all of that from the Cyrce’s gems must be pushing it up the ranking.

The only thing I didn’t understand was your comment about “list ranking” vs. “actually running best in bags”. Is the list ranking the list that pops up when I click on the ring in the right panel in BiB? So you’re saying the BiB suggestions are correct but the list is off?

Ugh I hate gearing up at the beginning of season it’s so confusing!

Thanks again

Yes, when you click on a slot in the solution and see the ranked list of e.g. each ring, that is a separate “quick” ranking just to give you a rough idea. When you press Optimize and run Best in Bags, that does a very comprehensive optimization that tries orders of magnitude more combinations to find the best setup of gear that you own.
