I recently updated resto shaman to our new calculations.
In general, I think the consensus is that stats are close in value for resto shamans. How any one person does their calculations will tip it in favor of one stat over another.
Historically, versatility was considered the second best stat because haste and mastery were not favored. Point for point, versatility is a less efficient stat. In midnight we have less mana problems on resto shaman, so haste is a more attractive stat. This will make versatility a low priority pick, especially in season 1. It can act as a good multiplier on your other stats once we get to higher gear levels.
As far as crit being better than haste… our model likes haste a little more than crit. Not a lot more, as you can see we want a lot of both. We are doing a combination of simulation and calculations, which gives us a sophisticated breakdown of all the interactions between spells and talents to do our calculations with.
To make haste less valuable than crit, we would need to introduce some mana constraints, which quickly tanks the value of haste depending on the fight length. We have found that people generally prefer to optimize for max hps while they have mana, not for maximum healing over a set time period with their mana pool. This approach matches the “meta” suggestions for all other healing specs.
I would recommend trying the suggestions we have, and then if you are running out of mana way too fast, pull back on the haste. You can use the customize → secondary stats to push the optimizer towards a different stat balance. And then as you get more comfortable or your team gets better gear and you aren’t mana-limited, shift back to the default suggestions, which will maximize your healing per second while you have mana.
I feel confident in the stats being suggested for healers on the site right now. We are doing an actual simulation of healers and then a layer of calculations on top of that.
I tried making some changes to see if there is a way to make crit better than haste. I tried changing the balance between healing wave vs chain heal casts to favor more healing wave. This quickly pushes the results strongly in favor of haste > crit. Including more chain heals keeps haste >= crit. This is because healing wave has 100% crit chance during ascendance. If you take no ascendance - related talents, the effect is of course dampened. I double checked our ancestral awakening calculations too, as that can be a source of value for crit.
I will keep an eye on this. Right now I think the meta will shift towards more haste for resto shamans. We might be a little ahead of the curve on that because we have the simulator to give us data ahead of in-game logs.
