The Burning Crusade Classic optimization tools: the ability to set a Crit Threshold / Minimum Crit % target in gear optimization

Hi Ask Mr. Robot team,

I’d like to request a feature for The Burning Crusade Classic optimization tools: the ability to set a Crit Threshold / Minimum Crit % target in gear optimization.

For Beast Mastery Hunters using Wind Serpent, reaching certain crit levels is highly valuable because pet crit scaling and uptime interactions can make thresholds like ~30% crit especially impactful. Right now, stat weights alone don’t always prioritize hitting these practical breakpoints, even when it would be the best real-world DPS outcome.

A useful implementation could be:

  • Minimum Crit % target (example: 30%)

  • Optimizer prioritizes reaching that threshold before resuming normal stat-weight optimization

  • Optional soft cap / diminishing priority after threshold

  • Support for raid-buffed vs unbuffed crit targets

This would be especially helpful for players optimizing around pet breakpoints, proc consistency, and spec-specific gearing decisions rather than pure linear weights.

Thanks for considering it — your tools are excellent, and this would add a lot of value for TBC players trying to optimize accurately.

I think you can almost do what you want with the existing tools:

You can adjust raid buffs in the options section of Best in Bags and Best in Slot optimizer.

Under the Customize tab of Best in Bags and Best in Slot is a tool for specifying stat thresholds. It currently doesn’t let you choose crit, but we can add that in the next website update. When you enable stat thresholds it will have a link right there to a post about how to use it and how it works.

For crit you would enter a value like “30” to get 30%. That would be your final actual chance to crit, including things like your base crit, crit from agility, talents that give flat crit that affect all abilities, etc. It is common for people in the community to come up with stat thresholds that are specific to specific builds e.g. “if you have this talent that gives crit you want 27%, if you don’t, you want 30%.” You don’t have to deal with that on our site – you would always enter the final amount of crit you want, after everything. The only caveat is things that don’t affect every ability, e.g. if you are targeting 30% crit with a specific ability and there is a talent that buffs just the crit rate of that one ability by 5%, THEN you would want to subtract it out and enter 25%.

Note that when I run Best in Slot for a Beast Mastery hunter using a pretty default talent build it already gets 30%+ crit, so I would suggest not using a stat threshold unless you absolutely need it. Often times these crit thresholds are determined by theorycrafters under optimal conditions – where they have complete Best in Slot gear available and full raid buffs.

If you don’t have enough gear to reach 30% crit without making a lot of sacrifices… nobody has really worked out if it would be better to pick a different combination of stats until you get more gear, that is… other than us! Our optimizer will find a solution under any set of constraints and try to maximize your output. It might be the case that falling a little short of this threshold works out better until you get more gear.
